$1 to $9

These "wildcard" characters are used with the RegExp object to represent the terms of the search string. That is, in declaring a RegExp object, with search parameters, the $1 to $9 characters represent parenthesized substring matches. Se the RegExp objeect listing to learn how to use the RegEp object, and what search parameters are available. The order of the returned parenthesized substring matches is based on the position of the left parentheses of the substring components. The leftmost subcomponent is placed in the $1 position, the next in the $2 position, etc. The properties encompassed with the $n values may be used directly within parameters of String methods which use regular expressions.
